JAH9 CONFRONTS THE CALM AND CHAOS IN ‘HURRICANE’
When visionary Jamaican artist Jah9 began her Open Heart Project, she framed it as a journey through love’s evolution. Two years in, that journey reaches its breaking point. Hurricane, the third chapter in the four-part series, is produced by Winta James and released through VP Records.
The track opens into the storm after tenderness fades. Its pulsing rhythm and grounded vocals trace how fantasy gives way to truth, how connection bends under the weight of expectation. Jah9’s delivery feels both vulnerable and resolute, signalling the turbulence of disillusionment before calm returns.
In her words, “Our ancestors have long used storytelling to pass on wisdom, build connection and strengthen shared values. With ‘Hurricane,’ my intention is to gather and hold space for like minds and open hearts to have meaningful and necessary conversations.” The statement reads as both reflection and invitation, urging listeners to look inward.

The accompanying visualiser, directed by Jah9 herself, expands the song’s duality. Two storylines unfold side by side, one shaped by desire, the other by reality. Through subtle gestures and layered symbolism, she exposes the quiet fractures within intimacy.
Since New Name in 2013, Jah9 has carried her message far beyond Jamaica. Her acclaimed Note to Self album and global tours have marked her as a defining voice in modern reggae. With Hurricane, she moves deeper into storytelling, exploring not escape, but reckoning.
ABOUT JAH9
