VAULTS OF GOLD: DENNIS BROWN’S IT’S MAGIC RISES AGAIN

Unearthed from the King Jammy vaults, Dennis Brown’s 1984 gem It’s Magic, resurfaces on streaming platforms for the very first time. These lovingly remastered recordings, released by VP Records, gather the original album cut, a tantalising alternate mix, and a King Jammy dub into one irresistible drop.

Close your eyes, and that voice finds you instantly. Warm and familiar, wrapping itself around a melody like smoke curling from incense. Dennis Emmanuel Brown, The Crown Prince of Reggae, feels as close as ever.

Riding the Hypocrites riddim, It’s Magic is built on the bones of Bob Marley and The Wailers’ 1967 classic. Producer King Jammy frames Brown’s gentle vibrato beautifully, and Brown does the rest.

EFFORTLESS, SOULFUL AND COMPLETELY TIMELESS

He sings about longing and romance with his trademark tenderness, turning grey skies blue without a single wasted syllable.

The release also reminds us how significant Jammys Records truly was. As a label, it pioneered reggae’s seismic shift into digital dancehall, most famously through Wayne Smith’s earth-shaking Under Mi Sleng Teng in 1985, and its Waterhouse sound shaped titans like Tenor Saw, Cocoa Tea and Admiral Bailey.

Yet above all of that history, this is pure Brown. Effortless, soulful and completely timeless. Press play and feel the magic do exactly what it promises.
