TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT STRIPS BACK TO ESSENTIALS ON COMPELLING ‘IN DUB’

Danish outfit Total Hip Replacement have long mastered the art of fusion. Their relaxed yet energetic album In Dub weaves reggae with soul, jazz and African rhythms, powered by sophisticated brass and delicate percussion.

Their recent albums, Anyankofo and Would It Be The Same, drew heavily from collaborations with Ghanaian musicians, infusing their work with authentic highlife flavours. But around 2022, the band took a bold step sideways. They handed selected tracks to accomplished dub producers, curious how their compositions would fare when stripped bare and reimagined.

The result is In Dub, an eight-track collection curated by Karsten Frehe of Irie Ites Music. Aldubb kicked things off with a dub of Disconnected from their 2020 album Bliss. Danish sound engineer MF Dub, celebrated for his work with Copenhagen’s Guiding Star Orchestra, contributed two versions. German dub stalwart The Dubvisionist from Hannover added another pair.

IN DUB IS EVIDENCE OF TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT’S COMPOSITIONAL STRENGTH

Dr Markuse and Oliver Frost bring their distinctive touches, while Canadian maestro Dubmatix from Toronto closes proceedings with his interpretation of The Door.

What emerges is evidence of the outfit’s compositional strength. Their dubs reimagine the originals with playful experimentation and subtle effects. In Dub showcases Total Hip Replacement’s remarkable musicality and inventive craftsmanship.

Total Hip Replacement rose from the Aarhus scene, chasing a brass-driven sound that kept shifting as they travelled. They began with Wonder Why in 2018, then moved toward deeper textures on Bliss in 2020.

Their journey to Ghana in 2022 shaped a bold chapter with Anyankofo, mixing highlife lines with Fanti vocals. They now tour Europe, testing each groove in real time and pushing their music forward through shared momentum.
