One of the most influential groups of this era was The Skatalites, widely regarded as the pioneers of ska and some of the greatest musicians to ever come out of Jamaica.
The Skatalites were formed in 1964 and consisted of a talented line-up of musicians, including legendary saxophonist Tommy McCook, trombonist Don Drummond, tenor sax player Roland Alphonso, drummer Lloyd Knibb, and keyboard prodigy Jackie Mittoo. For a year and a half, this instrumental powerhouse dominated the music industry on the island with its electrifying performances and innovative sound.

The Skatalites are a legendary band that defined the sound of Jamaica in the 1950s and 1960s. They pioneered ska, blending calypso, Caribbean mento, R&B, and rock & roll. Despite their original incarnation lasting only 18 months, they left their signature style on hundreds of island releases. The band re-formed in 1986 and continues to tour and record, producing memorable tracks like “Hi-Bop Ska” and “On the Right Track.” Their classics have influenced artists like The Clash, The Police, Sublime, and No Doubt.
