In the company of North London’s sound system governor Kiko Bun, ‘Big Time’ gets to steppin’ with a swaying, Pepe Deluxe-ish organ groove streaked with a folky, 60s touch of psychedelia. Kiko Bun’s twang, apologetic as a well-to-do rascal with a twinkle in his eye, generates a comforting hum in sync with The Nextmen comfortably getting their groove on.
As The Nextmen Brad Baloo and Dom Search’s long career has produced numerous high-caliber style and sound clashes. The Nextmen have remixed London Posse, Public Enemy, Blackalicious, Morcheeba, and Groove Armada, collaborated with Plan B, Ms. Dynamite, Alice Russell, Ty, Fat Freddy’s Drop, and honorary Nextman Dynamite MC, and toured the globe as festival favorites, curating exclusive sets for everything from MTV to Cannes.
2021’s collaboration with Eva Lazarus, ‘Rudegyal’/’Afterglow Dub’, was supported by BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, Nemone and Huey Morgan, 1xtra’s David Rodigan, and was Jo Whiley’s ‘Infatuation of the Week’ on BBC Radio 2. Sharing the love with Krafty Kuts, Tippa Irie, and Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na, ‘Chicken of the Sea’/’Combination’ kept up the momentum and caught the ear of Radio 1’s Jeremiah Asiamah, and 6 Music’s Gideon Coe and Don Letts.
