WESTBOUND TRAIN’S ‘SING THE GHOST AWAY’ BREATHES SOUL INTO MODERN SKA

After years of quiet, Westbound Train return with a sound that feels both familiar and fresh. The horns rise, the rhythm settles in, and before long, the Boston ska and soul collective pull us back into their groove. On Sing the Ghost Away, frontman Obi Fernandez and drummer Eric Novod guide the band through rich analogue textures and deeply felt songwriting, capturing a mood that’s confident and alive.

The album’s pulse beats strongest on L.M.A., a defiant anthem of self-worth, and their latest release, Slippery Slope, a soulful reminder to stay grounded through uncertainty. Keeper From the Start and a reimagined We All Need Rescue deepen the emotional reach, weaving stories of resilience and renewal.

A DYNAMIC MIX OF ANALOGUE TONES MARK THEIR MOST EXPRESSIVE WORK YET

Recorded at The Relic Room in New York City and mixed by Tim Panella, the record’s lush horn lines, rich percussion and layered harmonies highlight the band’s maturity. Each track feels lived-in yet forward-looking, a testament to years spent refining a sound that bridges eras.

Due out on 7 November, Sing The Ghost Away marks Westbound Train’s most soulful and assured evolution, a record that reaffirms why their blend of ska, rocksteady and soul endures.

Westbound Train’s ‘Sing the Ghost Away’ breathes soul into modern ska. Reggae Tastemaker

Formed at Berklee College of Music in 2001, Westbound Train began by playing Boston clubs and sharing their love of ska, reggae, and soul. Their horn lines cut through the air, vocals soared and rhythms moved every room they entered.

From the Vans Warped Tour to Rude Cat Festival, the band carried classic Jamaican sounds forward, blending influence and experience into a feel-good, soulful legacy that still resonates worldwide.
