RANKING JOE AND SLY & ROBBIE TEAM UP FOR ‘TOP RANKING’ ALBUM
‘Top Ranking’ is a fresh reggae album from the illustrious Ranking Joe, created in collaboration with the iconic duo Sly & Robbie. This collection of ten tracks, released on the Tabou1 label, is expertly mixed by Colin ‘Bulby’ Yorke and showcases Ranking Joe’s sharp lyrical prowess and deep-rooted passion for reggae.
From the socially conscious “AI,” which warns against the dangers of artificial intelligence, to the vibrant “Mama Africa,” this album is a powerful statement.
Ranking Joe, born Joseph Jackson in 1959, has always stood out in the reggae scene. Starting his career at just 15, he quickly rose to prominence as a DJ for the El Paso Hi-Fi Sound system, where he became known for his unique, fast-talking style. Over the years, he recorded hits with top producers and even launched his own label, Ranking Joe Universal. His impact on the reggae world is undeniable.
In Top Ranking, Ranking Joe’s lyrical prowess shines once again. Tracks like “AI” tackle the dangers of artificial intelligence, with lines like “ChatGPT can’t control we; AI, AI can’t control I & I” striking a chord.
Meanwhile, songs like “Babylon Destroy Creation” and “Too Much Bloodstain” offer sharp social commentaries, while “Mama Africa” pays homage to the motherland.
The album also features a special cover of the Gladiators’ hit “Stick A Bush” with a unique twist. With Top Ranking, Ranking Joe and Sly & Robbie have crafted a powerful, thought-provoking album that both honours reggae’s roots and pushes its boundaries.
