MYKAL ROSE & SUBATOMIC SOUND SYSTEM LINK UP WITH HOLLIE COOK FOR SCORCHING REGGAE SINGLE ‘GET HIGH’

Reggae icon Mykal Rose, known for his work with the Grammy Award-winning Jamaican group Black Uhuru, has teamed up with NYC dub specialists Subatomic Sound System and London lover’s rock queen Hollie Cook, for a new single, ‘Get High’.

The new single is the first offering from the trio’s upcoming collaborative full-length album, due for release in summer 2024.

‘Get High’ is a roots reggae track with a modern twist, featuring heavy bass, drums, and effects. The song also features classic Jamaican reggae elements, such as percussion from conga legend Larry McDonald, timeless horn lines from Troy Simms, and dubwise melodica from Emch.

Subatomic’s Emch says, “Musically, this is a journey through the past and the future at the same time with ancient melodies and drums floating on electronic bass waves and a subatomic heartbeat.”

Hollie Cook’s ethereal background vocals float atop Mykal Rose’s rugged tenor as they deliver an uplifting message. “I really appreciate Emch’s vision of how I fit into this new project. Doing background and harmony is my favourite!” she says.

Mykal Rose says he has always wanted to do things differently with his music. “With Black Uhuru and Sly & Robbie, we try to reach beyond reggae and draw everything in to create universal music.”

Rose first recorded with Lee Perry at Black Ark as a teenager. He says that Perry was different for sure, and “I see the work Scratch do with Subatomic different too, same way for this generation, reaching beyond.”

‘Get High’ is the result of a collaboration between three artists with unique backgrounds. The song is a journey through the past and the future, with ancient melodies and drums floating on electronic bass waves.

Mykal Rose, a reggae legend, has captivated audiences for decades. His solo career blossomed early on with singles like ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner’. In 1977 he joined the iconic Black Uhuru, propelling the group to international fame. Their 1984 Grammy win for ‘Anthem’ cemented their place in reggae history.

Mykal’s stage presence and signature vocals became synonymous with the ‘Waterhouse’ sound. He left Black Uhuru to pursue solo efforts, releasing successful albums and touring. Today, he remains a reggae force, seamlessly blending his glorious past with a bright future.

Hollie Cook’s enchanting voice and infectious energy have carved a unique path in reggae music. Starting young, she joined the legendary punk band The Slits at 19, touring globally and honing her skills.

In 2011, she launched her solo career with the acclaimed album ‘Hollie Cook’, followed by a string of hit singles. Standout performances with The Stone Roses and on ‘Later…With Jools Holland’ propelled her into the spotlight.
