JAMAICAN DANCEHALL ARTIST SANJAY BREAKS MOLD WITH EMOTIONAL CONCEPT ALBUM
Sanjay presents his debut album, titled “Man Of My Word”. It is a unique perspective from a Jamaican dancehall artist who shows himself in a more emotional and vulnerable state on this concept album.
The album features singers Alaine, Tara Harrison, and Meera and is instrumentally performed by some of Jamaica’s most respected musicians. Several tracks have been co-produced by the legendary producer and songwriter Mikey Bennett.
The lead single from this album is called “She Wants More”. It tells the story of someone who feels unfulfilled and helpless and another who feels powerless to help. The music video features Angolan dancer and choreographer Albertina Costa, also known as DHQ Aysha, and was filmed in Portugal by videographer Thomas Dylan Harris.
“Man Of My Word” takes the listener on an emotional journey through the stages of a breakup, from the first song about feeling insecure to the final track about reminiscing on promises left unfulfilled and dreams left disappointed. The album’s title refers to Sanjay’s first popular song of the same name. The late Arif Cooper produced the song on the Guardian Angel Riddim.
Originally, Sanjay planned to title the album “Lonely Hands, Lonely Feet, Lonely Heart, Lonely Beat” after closing a five-year relationship. However, he followed the advice of his mentor Mikey Bennett, who guided him in creating this work and decided to name the album “Man Of My Word” after his famous song.
The project can be considered the beginning of a new genre called “EMO dancehall”, with complications in romantic relationships being the common thread throughout.
