PROTOJE DROPS “IN SEARCH OF ZION” REMIX ALBUM, A ROOTS REGGAE REVIVAL
Protoje has released a new remix album titled In Search Of Zion, available on all digital streaming platforms and as a special edition vinyl via In.Digg.Nation Collective / RCA Records. To create this fresh, ambient and soulful remix album, the Jamaican artist and visionary collaborated with producer collective Zion I Kings, recreating his critically acclaimed 2020 album In Search of Lost Time in a traditional meets modern roots reggae style. The LP also features dub versions of each track.
This reimagined LP marks the final piece of Protoje’s trilogy of time-themed albums, including A Matter Of Time (2018), In Search of Lost Time (2020) and Third Time’s The Charm (2022). Protoje describes In Search Of Zion as a “closing chapter” that showcases his different music styles.
Zion I Kings is a team of three producers and labels – David “Jah David” Goldfine of Zion High Productions, Laurent “Tippy I” Alfred of I Grade Records, and Andrew “Moon” Bain of Lustre Kings Productions – with a 50+ album catalogue and 2x Best Reggae Album Grammy nominations for Snoop Lion in 2014 and Protoje in 2022. Their seasoned sound of live roots reggae instrumentation, featuring pounding kick drums, slapping snares, deep basslines, lush synthesizers and dub influences, brought new dimensions to Protoje’s lyrics and songwriting.
Each of the three Zion I Kings producers oversaw production and mixing work on particular songs, resulting in the album presenting a sonic signature of the collective, but also the individual approaches of the producers. The accompanying dub mixes allow each song’s unique production approach to shine, with traditional dub brushes of delays and reverb working alongside modern filtering and digital mixing techniques that bridge Jamaican dub mixing tradition with the current times.
Produced during the 2020 lockdown, In Search of Zion was a collaboration that helped the team pull through the tragic loss of Andrew “Drew Keys” Stoch, a core member and collaborator who passed away shortly after the project commenced. The album is a testament to fortitude, creating a roots reggae healing journey that cycles through a complete range of sound, colour, and emotion.
Protoje and his band, The Indiggnation, recently concluded their 10-city+ European tour across France, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, and Germany. He is preparing for his next annual staging of The Lost In Time Festival, set for February 24, 2024, in Kingston, Jamaica. Additionally, Protoje will release his first children’s book titled Here Comes The Morning this month, which is dedicated to his daughter Yara and inspired by his song of the same name. Jonathan Nelson illustrated the book.
