Prince Fatty Meets The Gorgon In Dub - Reggae Tastemaker

DUB MASTER PRINCE FATTY REMIXES BUNNY LEE CLASSICS IN NEW ALBUM

Prince Fatty (Mike Pelanconi), a recording engineer and producer, has created new Dub mixes and edits of 10 classic Roots Reggae tracks from the vintage Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee Reggae catalogue.

The original tracks were voiced by famous reggae artists such as Horace Andy, Linval Thompson, Cornel Campbell, Leroy Smart, and Don Carlos, among others, during the golden era of Reggae. Prince Fatty made these mixes in real-time in the analogue realm and recorded them to 15 i.p.s reel-to-reel tape, following the tradition pioneered by King Tubby and Bunny Lee in the 1970s.

Edward O’Sullivan Lee, O.D. (1941-2021), who was also known as ‘Striker’ or ‘Striker Lee’, was the most renowned Jamaican record producer of the 1970s. Lee was at the forefront of a continuum of new genres, such as Rocksteady and Reggae. Through his association with Osbourne Ruddock (King Tubby), he played a vital role in introducing Dub music to the global marketplace.

Mike Pelanconi (Prince Fatty) is considered one of the world’s best modern Dub producers. He has introduced new generations to the worlds of Reggae, Soul, and Latin grooves. Pelanconi was credited with “virtually reinventing lovers rock” on the first two Hollie Cook albums, starting with her breakthrough hit “Milk And Honey” in 2011. He also mixed Lily Allen’s bestselling Alright Still album under Mike Pelanconi.

Pelanconi’s love for music from different cultures has led him to collaborate with musicians from New York to São Paolo to Lagos to Bangkok. He learned his craft with Rebel MC, The Orb, On U Sound, and Acid Jazz before spending time in Los Angeles at the hip-hop label Delicious Vinyl. He has worked with many musical talents, including Horseman, Mungo’s Hi-Fi, Winston Francis, Big Youth, Earl 16, Manu Chao, Mad Professor, The Last Poets, Tony Allen, and the legendary J Dilla.

Artist Herbert Spliffington created the cover illustration, which is based on the long history of comic book superhero cover art in the dub tradition. The Gorgon character is based loosely on the Gorgon of Greek mythology and the volcano God character from Moana.

Prince Fatty’s music can be heard in the pantheon of international popular culture, on soundtracks to shows like Breaking Bad and Grey’s Anatomy, and in games like GTA. His analogue speciality and DJ skills make him a favourite at clubs, festivals, and guesting on heavyweight sound systems.
