MUNGO’S HI FI RELEASE THEIR PAST AND PRESENT ALBUM PROJECT
Mungo’s Hi Fi is a Scottish sound system and production house at the forefront of the reggae music scene for many years. Their latest album, ‘Past And Present’, is a testament to their ability to blend old and new sounds to create a unique listening experience. Through dubs and re-workings of past and present work, they have created tracks showcasing their versatility and creativity.
One of the album’s highlights is the title track, ‘Past And Present’, which features the haunting voice of French pure singjay PapaJim. The song encourages listeners to face the moment with an exploratory, ever-moving rhythm. This track perfectly captures the essence of Mungo’s Hi Fi’s sound, which is rooted in the traditional sounds of reggae but incorporates elements of modern production techniques.
Another standout track is ‘Sugar Water’, which features ethereal UK neo lovers rock singer Hollie Cook. This daring Mungo’s remix of Hollie’s 2011 Prince Fatty-produced love meditation ‘Sugar Water’ finds Hollie supplying pure audio nectar, floating above a sparse and eerie Rub A Dub soundscape. This track showcases the band’s ability to collaborate and create something unique with other artists.
The album’s third single track, ‘Only Love’, features Prince Alla and updates a classic from reggae’s glorious past. The biblical voice of the Jamaican veteran singer sounds fresh on a sweltering revisit to his immortal 1979 Bertram Brown production, ‘Only Love Can Conquer’. This track is a testament to the band’s ability to pay homage to the legends of reggae while still putting their spin on things.
Overall, ‘Past And Present’ is a fantastic album showcasing Mungo’s Hi Fi’s ability to blend old and new sounds to create something unique. With collaborations from some of the most talented artists in the reggae scene, this album is a must-listen for fans of the genre.
