DESTINY: LEE ‘SCRATCH’PERRY NEW SINGLE PRODUCED BY BOB RIDDIM FT. EVIE PUKUPOO (NO-MADDZ)
The legacy of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, the Grammy-winning reggae legend, teamed up with Grammy Nominated producer Bob Riddim to bring you a brand-new album project called “Destiny”.
This collaboration between the veteran reggae innovator and the new generation of Jamaican artists is genuinely one of a kind.
The first single and title track, “Destiny” features the soulful voice of Evie Pukupoo (AhPuku) from the idiosyncratic dub poetry/reggae group, The No-Maddz, alongside Scratch’s profound lyrics. The song has a modern reggae backing track, crafted with love by Bob Riddim, and the lyrics reference the roots of reggae with its blossoming branches.
The album was recorded 12 months before Scratch’s passing in 2021 and comprises nine original tracks. Almost all instruments were played by Bob Riddim, fusing modern reggae with the Upsetter’s colourful vision and vibe.
Scratch’s poetic lyrics address deep and existentialist themes, reflecting his decades of dedication to his craft. It’s a daring return to Perry’s early days’ artistic rigour and forward-thinking approach.
This album is truly special and will go down in history as one of Lee Perry’s last long-playing albums. With this project, the Upsetter delivers a high-quality, contemporary reggae record that revisits the art forms he initiated. Scratch holds court, surrounded by the new guard of experimental Kingston talent, and together they push the boundaries with a procession of cohesive songs ranging from new roots to psychedelic dub.
We hope you enjoy listening to “Destiny” and the rest of the album as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you!
The album is scheduled for worldwide release on September 8th via Delicious Vinyl Island.
