TAJ WEEKES & THE LIGERIANS CALCULATE THE ECONOMY OF GENEROSITY

St. Lucian poet-activist Taj Weekes joins forces with French roots masters The Ligerians for How Much, a deceptively understated meditation on conditional generosity released through SoulNurse Records.

The track poses uncomfortable questions. “How much does it cost / To get something for free?” Weekes asks over The Ligerians’ luminous rocksteady groove. His lyrics pierce through social niceties, exposing the “hidden transaction fees” that corrupt genuine human connection.

Weekes brings serious credentials. He’s a UNICEF Children’s Champion and the founder of TOCO (They Often Cry Outreach). His humanitarian work bleeds directly into his songwriting. Every line carries weight.

A VOICE THAT SPEAKS TRUTH, AND A BAND THAT GIVES IT DEPTH

The Ligerians provide the perfect foundation. This Tours-based collective has backed everyone from Max Romeo to Vaughn Benjamin, spending fifteen years honing their precise, soulful sound along the Loire River. Their rhythms breathe life into Weekes’ philosophical inquiry.

This Franco-Caribbean partnership embodies the Each One Teach One philosophy both artists champion. The result feels urgent yet timeless, a roots reggae sermon for an age drowning in transactional relationships.

How Much strips away pretence. It’s a sober reminder that authentic generosity can’t be commodified. Sometimes the most radical act is giving without expectation. True freedom, Weekes suggests, demands nothing in return.
